Bayview Traffic Delays St Luke’s Grammar School

There are traffic delays at the intersection of Pittwater Road and Loquat Valley Road at Bayview during school children drop off and pick up times by their Parents at

St Luke’s Grammar School.

BCPRA recognises the need for safe pedestrian access for School Children, Parents, Teachers and the Public alike as well as the timely flow of through traffic on Pittwater Road in the vicinity of St Luke’s Grammar School. With this in mind the BCPRA has taken action as briefly outlined below:

On 8 December 2023 a letter was sent to the Council raising local residents (I.e. Bayview, Church Point and Off-Shore) concerns and frustrations with major traffic delays on Pittwater Road at Bayview as a resulting from Parents’ queuing on this busy through road at morning drop off and more particularly afternoon pick up at St Luke‘s.

On 22 January 2024 Council’s letter in reply advised that it is having regular discussions with St Luke’s about the safety of their students and the impact their school is having on the local area together with a range of suggestions.  Subsequently on 19 February 2024 the BCPRA wrote to the Council indicating that their response did not adequately address the traffic management concerns raised on 8 December 2023.

On 4 April 2024 at the BCPRA Annual General Meeting this traffic management matter was raised with the Mayor and the three representative Local Councillors.  Proposals such as the provision of a dedicated left turn lane into Loquat Valley Road was discussed despite the infrastructure challenges from telecommunications and electricity and gas connections. After some discussion it was agreed that Council’s Community Liaison Officer would keep the BCPRA informed on any progress on this matter.

Update 15 September 2025

St Luke’s Grammar School is continuing to work with the Northern Beaches Council’s Traffic Safety Officer to identify further opportunities to alleviate the impact of this traffic management issue on the local Community. There are some 45% of students who are travelling to School either by Public Transport or walking.  Also the School has been encouraging Parents to stagger their afternoon pick up times as a way of improving the flow of traffic.

In September 2025 the Council at the Association’s request approved and installed new traffic management signage i.e. Motor Vehicles Excepted. These signs have been placed along Pittwater Road from the Pedestrian Crossing at Bayview easterly towards Gibsons Marina. The purpose in the change in signage is to improve access to limited parking for the benefit of Residents, Visitors and School Parents alike
